Kathryn Tickell has almost single-handedly popularised the Northumbrian small pipes over the last 15 years. This well-presented collection takes the curious listener even further. Unlike the compilation norm, it has been specially recorded by Nimbus. The participants have pedigrees that mostly stretch back to the 1970s, with a big bag of piping prizes shared out between Richard Butler, Anthony Robb, Adrian Schofield and Alan Jones. Northumbrian music has a very strong regional identity, although it has been cross-bred with Scottish and Irish influences over the centuries. The piping repertoire has also been healthily preserved in print. The drone is all-important, its wheezing continuum underlying the whole melodic process, created by an inflatable underarm bag which is kept taut by a side-arm bellows. The individual notes are pipped out with nimble-fingered delicacy on the chanter keys. The five players (one of whom, Chris Ormston, also uses the Scottish smallpipes) appear in different permutations, either solo, in pairs, or with one of four fiddling partners. One set of pipes can create a very big spread of sound, but this disc has the bonus of three tunes which combine two resonating pipers, a fiddler providing yet another harmonic level.--Martin Longley
